Day 1: Cusco -Soraypampa-Humantay lake-Salkantay Trek Pampa-Ichupata

This awesome Salkantay trek & Classic Inca trail begins with your trekking guide, chef, and porters picking you up from your hotel (it has to be located in Cusco) at 5:00 a.m. and then we will be driven for 3 hours to the Salkantay Trek trailhead called Soraypampa (3900 m.a.s.l). 

Here we will meet our muleteer and mules, and also we will delight our buffet breakfast prepare by our expert hiking chef. Following we hike uphill for 2 hours from the trailhead to the breathtaking blue teal lake called Humantay, once up there your guide will show you the best lookouts to you take memmorable pictures to obtain more than 20000 likes in instagram and also you tour guide will share interesting facts about the Salkantay Trek, the mountains and lagoons. Upon arrival to our campsite our tent and duffle will be already pitched, we give you warm water in buckets to you wash up, change into some clean clothes, and rest after a moderate and beautiful first day on the Salkantay trek, then get ready for happy hour with hot chocolate, coffee, popcorn and finally our yummy dinner.

Day 2: Ichupata-Incachiriaska Pass-Inca Channel

we will be woken up at 5:00. a.m with coca tea and a bucket of warm water to you wash up the face and wake up in a better way, then we will have 30 to 40 minutes to pack essentials and 30 minutes to delight our nutritious and delicious buffet breakfast. Then we begin hiking uphill on the Salkantay Trekking route for 2 hours and 30 minutes, this will be the most challeging part of our hike but also regarding with outstanding views of two lagoons one blue teal and the other a yellowish green one, on the left side as our guard;  the impressive Salkantay snowy mountain (6272) that will enchant our eyes all the time, falcons and probably condors. Upon to arrival to the first mountain pass our chef will be waiting for us with hot drinks and snacks. From this mountain pass we will be able to observe the Salkantay mountain in all its splendor ( the Salkantay mountain is considered an Apu or mountain god for many indigeneous people from Cusco)

Following we hike 2 hours downhill observing big reddish orange mountains ( these colors are due to iron oxide and sulfate) to our lunch spot. Once at lunch spot our porters and chef will be waiting with cooled fruit juice and yummy buffet lunch. After lunch and digest time for 30 minutes we continue hiking downhill on the Salkantay Trek route for 3 hours through green valleys and winding streams full of herds of llamas and alpacas. Our campsite is located in a hamlet of 10 families, so we will take advantage of this to visit them and learn more about their lifestyle and traditions. Upon arrival to our campsite our tent and duffle will be already pitched, we give you warm water in buckets to you wash up, change into some clean clothes, and rest after a challenging and pretty second day on the Salkantay trek, then get ready for happy hour with hot chocolate, coffee, popcorn and finally our delicious dinner.

Day 3: Inca Channel-Wayllabamba- Classic Inca Trail -Llulluchapampa

This day after our delicious breakfast we will still hike on the Salkantay Trek route for 2 hours next to a winding stream and through a path full of aromatic and medicinal bushes.Then we will arrive at a pretty Inca ruin known as Paucarcancha, here your tour guide will share detail information about this inca structure. Following we will hike 40 more minutes to Wayllabamba (a hamlet located in the beginning of the Classic Inca Trail) here our porters and chef will be waiting with cold fruit juice and a yummy buffet lunch.

After 30 minutes of digest we will hike 3 hours and a half inside the Classic Inca Trail until Llulluchapampa which is our basecamp; this last 3 hours of hiking is through a special microclimate known as » the tiny forest of the highlands» this strech will make you feel to be in the amazon forest for a bit. 

Upon arrival to our campsite our tent and duffle will be already pitched, we give you warm water in buckets to you wash up, change into some clean clothes, and rest after a moderate and beautiful first day on the Inca Trail hike, then get ready for happy hour with hot chocolate, coffee, popcorn and finally our lovely dinner.

  • ** This day will be fascinating because we will have the opportunity to see the interesting and pretty landscape transition bewteen the Salkantay Trek and the Inca Trail Hike

Day 4 Llulluchapampa -Death Woman’s Pass-Pacaymayu-Puyupatamarca

We go to your tents at 5:30 am with a hot coca tea to wake you up, after 2 minutes we bring you warm water in buckets to you wash up your face and wake up in a better way. then you have between to 30 to 40 minutes to pack your essentials and then have breakfast for another 30 minutes to then start hiking over stone steps of the Classic Inca Trail made 500 years ago by the incas in a slow and steady pace for 2 hours towards the dead woman’s pass. In the way up to dead woman´s pass we will be surrounded by a huge mantle of alpine andean grass and beautiful sharp mountains, once at the top of the mountain pass we take pictures and celebrate our target giving thanks to Pachamama ( mother earth) and Apus (mountain gods) so we will perform an Andean ritual to show respect to these deities. Following we hike 2 hours downhill over stone steps to our lunch spot, along the way we enjoy a fantastic Andean scenery decorated by a 50 meters waterfall. Our lunch will be a delicious and nutritious buffet prepared by our expert hiking chef, after lunch we digest for 30 minutes and following we hike 2 hours uphill to the second mountain pass (Runcuracay), along this way up we are able to see deer, spectacled bear and a small Incan site just next to the Inca Trail where your guide will share information about the place. Upon arrival to the second mountain pass we are able to see by first time the outskirts of the amazon forest decorated on the left by the Vilcabamba snowcapped mountain range and on the right the Vilcanota snowcapped mountain range with snowy mountains bewteen 5500 y 6240 m.a.s.l. then we continue hiking downhill 1 hour to the inca site of Sayacmarca to explore it and have a guided tour with your tour guide. Following we hike 2 hours into an irregular surface composed of little ups, down and relatively flat stretches and so we get little by little in the cloud forest of the Inca Trail. On this part of the Inca trail trek we are able to appreciate one of the most surreal landscapes of the Inca Trail hike in addition to be an area full of orchids, fern, moss, etc; making this stretch one of the most interestings.  Upon arrival to our campsite our tent and duffle will be already pitched, We give you warm water in buckets to you wash up, change into some clean clothes and rest after a marvelous day on the Inca trail hike, then get ready for happy hour with chocolate, coffee, popcorn and dinner. Later in the evening get ready to be pleased by the most beautiful starry sky view of the Classic Inca Trail.

Day 5: Phuyupatamarca- Machu Picchu- Aguas Calientes

We go to your tents at 6:00 am with a hot coca tea to wake you up, after 2 minutes we bring you warm water in buckets to you wash up the face and  pack your essentials, then we have 40 minutes for an outside breakfast delighting the fantastic sunrise on this spot of the Inca trail hike, Salkantay snowy mountain wit its 6240 m.a.s.l and a bunch of surreal mountains inf front of us. Then we hike 10 minutes down to reach the first Incan site of the day,  your tour guide will make an stop on this wonderful place to have a history lesson about it, and also to see Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains in front of us, following we continue hiking downhill for 2 hours towards Intipata a big terraced farming area of the incas; this hike will be inside the cloud forest which has for us amazing wildlife of birds such as the cock of the rock (Peru’s national bird) the andean motmot , chachalacas, the great andean toucan, the blue faced masked trogon, tanagers, etc.

Upon our arrival to Intipata we will have personally for me one of best views of the whole Classic Inca trail, we will see in front of us the silhouette of the short Inca Trail hike and on our left side will be standing Machu Picchu Mountain. After this awesome view, We hike 30 more minutes to Wiñaywayna site also known as mini Machu Picchu where your guide will share information about it, then we have our last  buffet lunch and also We will have a digest time for 30 minutes to then continue hiking 1 hour and 30 minutes to the sungate to see Machupicchu by first time,here you will be pleased by the amazing view of the inca citadel and Huayna Picchu next to it. Then We hike 45 more minutes right to the lookouts at Machu Picchu, where we have plenty of time to take our long-awaited postcard photo to have more than 10,000 likes in instagram, and also be blessed by the sunset and connect with this masterpiece of our ancestors, then in the afternoon we catch our bus that goes down for 30 minutes to Aguas Calientes. Upon our arrival to Aguas Calientes your guide will Your guide will take you to your hotel so you have a well deserved rest and shower after having conquered our chalenging and beautiful classic Inca trail, then in the evening We will have a dinner at a lovely restaurant and We will plan everything for next day at Machu Picchu.

Day 6: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

In order to get well rested and have plenty of time to enjoy the views, pictures and lessons at Machu Picchu We suggest you to wake up by 5:00 am in the morning get ready, pack the essentials and take the bus  from Aguas Calientes town to Machu Picchu, this will a ride of 30 minutes untill reaching the inca citadel at 6:15 am more or less which will give you the chance to see the sunrise on this magnifecent location.

Your guide will give enough time to take pictures into the most beautiful spots of the Incan city, share lessons about this amazing Incan masterpiece and display you the most impressive details of Machu Picchu; then We take the bus back at more or less 12:00 pm down to Aguas Calientes to enjoy without rush our lunch. This lunch is optional and not included. At lunch, your guide will deliver out train tickets so if you opt to skip this, please arrange to get these train tickets before leaving him at Machu Picchu. Unless you requested for an upgraded train, We will book the Expedition class train departing Aguas Calientes at 3:20 p.m. or  4:22 p.m. This will be a 2 hour train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy (based on which train you get), where an Incas Path driver will meet you and drive you back to the city on our van, then we drop you off at the door of your hotel or the closest possible if the is not car access until your hotel.

Hotel: This Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail includes one night in a three-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of Machu Picchu. The hotel you book will be listed on your invoice, and upgrades are always available.

Briefing: The night before your trip, you will come to our office for your informative meeting. You will receive your duffle bag that will stay with your muleteer and porters while you hike on the the Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail . This duffle bag should not exceed 7 kg / 14 pounds and should include your sleeping bag and air mattress.

Porters: We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffle bag and also our camping equipment and food to our basecamp. There is no additional cost for this. You will not have access to your duffle bag until you arrive at your camp in the afternoon.

Transportation: Incas Path will be providing all transportation for this Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail . You will be picked up from your hotel at 5 am, ( hotel needs to be at Cusco) and brought to Soraypampa to begin your Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail . The train back from Aguas Calientes will be on the train called Expedition Class and will be included in your trip. You also have the option to upgrade to the Vistadome class train for $75 per person. Once you arrive at the train station, our van will take you back to your hotel in Cusco. In addition included is your bus ticket to go down from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes and the round trip bus ticket from Aguas calientes to Machu Picchu

Food: Our  Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail  includes expert hiking chefs who will will cook delicious meals that many previous trekkers have loved. We honor all food restrictions, so be sure to add any that you have on your booking form and let us know. Food is typically all served as buffet.

Water: Starting from your first lunch until your last breakfast We will provide you boiled, filtered, and then cooled water before distributing. You must bring personal water bottles and or a camelback. We advice you to bring a bottle or camelback of 1.5 litters , as being well hydrated is the key to feeling great in the mountains.

Details: we profess that it is the attention to small details that separates us from other travel agencies. Each hiker receives a small sleeping pillow, a foam mattress to insulate, a backpack cover to protect their belongings while hiking and a rain poncho. We will work hard to create your best holiday.

Satellite phones: our priority will always be the safety of our customers and our crew. While all our guides are prepared and trained to deal with most basic problems that occur in the mountains; Very rarely serious problems may occur that will require the assistance of a specialist doctor and that is when our satellite phones are very useful and necessary, also if you want to call a friend who is anywhere in the world, from the dead woman´s pass on your 4 day Inca trail or from the Salkantay Trek mountain pass or in case you need to verify the puppy that you left at home with the grandmother. While satellite phones are not cheap, We believe they are very important for your security and to give you the best possible experiencie.

First Aid: Every guide has got training in first aid from a clinic and firemen. We elaborate mandatory training sessions every February on the Inca Trail, which every Incas Path tour guide must attend. Your tour leader is going to have always a first-aid kit for basic medical problems.

Not Included on the Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail 

Rentals: Due there We are hiking the Salkantay trek & Classic Inca Trail , each trekker needs a sleeping bag when camping. Inflatable air mattresses and trekking poles (with rubber tips). They are optional but encouraged for a better comfort. If you don’t want to bring any of the above, they are all available for rent:

Additional options

Huayna Picchu is the mountain that stands next to Machu Picchu. It is a 1 hour hike to the top. While this hike is on your own, your guide will show you the entry. Huayna Picchu is an additional entrance ticket that we must secure for you with advance. The ticket is $75 per person.

Machu Picchu Mountain is the other mountain that stands above the Machu Picchu site. as Huayna Picchu it offers also spectacular views, this extra hike takes 3 hours round trip. This is an additional entrance ticket that we must secure for you in advance. This ticket is $75 per person.

Vistadome Train 

Our Salkantay Trek & Classic Inca Trail includes the ExpeditionTrain class. This train is always booked at 3:20 or 4:22 pm. departing from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo or Poroy. There is also the vistadome train class, which is an upgraded train that offers slightly larger seats and windows, some entertainment and snack. Usually, the Vistadome train is booked for 4:43 p.m. and goes to Poroy, a train station 30 minutes close to Cusco. As this is an upgraded fee, we will still include your transportation back to your hotel. The ticket is $75 per person.

Extra day at Machu Picchu

You will have from 6 am to 12 pm to enjoy Machu Picchu (it is not possible to be all day in Machu Picchu due to the new protection regulations developed by the Peruvian state), arriving at the citadel around 6 a.m. and leaving no later than 12 p.m. to take your train at 3:20 or 4:22 pm. If you also want to have a guided tour again the next day in Machu Picchu, we can also organize it.

Where do we pick up the hikers for the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike ?

Pick up will be from your hotel at 5:00  a.m. Please provide clear contact information of your place of accommodation when approaching our office in Cusco.

Where to pay the remaining amount for Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike?

Most hikers arrive in Cusco 2 or 3 days before the Inca trail hike for proper acclimatization. Once you are in Cusco it is imperative that you come to our office to review the last details of your excursion and also pay the remaining amount of your Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike .

Reserve for the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike?

We try to make the booking as easy as possible in Incas Path. We prepare a reservation form where you will complete and include all the details for the excursion, and then a deposit of $ 200 per person. Once we have all the deposits and details, we will reserve your permits. Once the Classic Inca Trail permits are in our hands, we will send you your invoice and confirmation that everything is 100% organized. All excursions once confirmed, are guaranteed.

Permissions for the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike?

Only tour operators licensed by the Inca Trail, such as Incas Path, can obtain the corresponding permits from the government. Once we have obtained your Inca Trail permits, the name and start date cannot be changed under any circumstances. The only information that the government allows us to change are passport numbers.

Passport Number Update?

The government will only allow us to change passport numbers if we have a copy of the new passport and the old passport. If you no longer have your old passport, any identification document that you have in your hands will be accepted while the name is the same as in your passport.

Where to stay in Cusco?

You can stay in a hotel that you consider convenient, however you must have the account of the location of the hotel because the traffic within the city has become stressful in the last 5 years. Many roads are up to 100 years old; Especially near the main square the roads are only for pedestrians. We will notify you if it is not possible to pick you up by car from your hotel and coordinate another nearby pick-up point. For a list of recommended hotels, consult your Incas Path sales representative.

Can I stay in the sacred valley?

No, as the Salkantay Trek does not go in dirrection of the sacred valley

Can I stay an additional night in Machu Picchu town or Aguas Calientes?

Of course, if you agree to take the same train from Aguas Calientes that is part of your original itinerary, which is usually at 3.20 or 4:22 pm, then there is no additional charge for the train to be booked one day. after. If you need us to insure your hotel or another visit to Machu Picchu, Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain this will have an additional cost. If you decide to spend another night in Aguas Calientes, be sure to inform the Incas Path office at least one month in advance, so that your train ticket is purchased for the correct day.

Can I book my hotel on my own in Aguas Calientes?

You can choose any hotel to stay in Aguas Calientes. It is a small and very safe town. If you decide to book your hotel, be sure to tell us where you plan to stay so we can take you there safely.

During the trip, how challenging is the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike ?

We require a minimum of 2 people for our tour, and if you are traveling alone, we invite you to join our groups that start each day. Due to New goverment regulations for the Inca Trail it will be 100% BANNED to BRING PLASTIC WATER  BOTTLES. We kindly suggest you getting your aluminum plastic bottles to avoid any dissapointment at the check points along the Inca Trail and in the Machu Picchu citadel.

Aluminum water bottles can be bought in many different shops around the main square. 

If you are still at home and ready to fly to Peru for your Inca trail we recommend you bringing aluminum water bottles or camel bags.

Where do I store my luggage?

All luggage not necessary for the hike must remain in Cusco. All hotels are very helpful and are quite accustomed to storing luggage of their guests, or if you wish you can store it safely with our customer service team in our office storage

What should I expect from the weather on the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike ?

Please understand that this is a very difficult question to answer. Historically, from April to October it is the dry season, from November to March it is the rainy season, but in recent years our weather has been affected by climate change and today it is very difficult to predict. Remember that in the mountains the radiation and heat are very high during the day and the evenings and nights always cold. We always recommend a short sleeve shirt for the classic Inca trail and Machu Picchu, long pants to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, rain jacket and a fleece jacket and for the night a down jacket.

Is there a possibility to cancel my Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike ?

There is no possibility to cancel the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike. Even in extreme weather conditions or even in case of a strike there will be no cancellation. The Peruvian government does not have any type of refund or change of date, because if there is any weather problem or strike that prevents us from entering the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail hike; We will do our best to provide you with an alternate hike or take you to Machu Picchu in some way. We will keep you very informed in case there is a strike or weather inconvenience in Peru, Cusco or Machu Picchu. In the event that a passenger decides to cancel their trip to Peru, they will lose the total amount deposited because the entrance tickets to the Classic Inca trail, Machu Picchu, train and bus tickets have already been purchased.
